What do they do? | Dè bhitheas iad a’ dèanamh?
Iain Dix is a 23 year old inshore fisherman with 7 years experience who has recently started his own fishing business and purchased his first vessel.
Iain will be operating static gear fishing for lobster and prawn in the waters
surrounding Uist.
The Journey | An Turas
The beginning – HIE’s involvement | Mar a tha HIE an sàs
Iain was referred to HIE by colleagues in Business Gateway who had worked with Iain to develop a business plan and to access start up funding from Prince’s Youth Business Scotland, the Outer Hebrides Fisheries Assistance Scheme and a bank loan. Despite making a substantial investment from his own funds, Iain was left with a £12,600 shortfall for the purchase of his fishing gear.
HIE’s contribution | An taic bho HIE
HIE granted £12,600 under the Fisheries and Aquaculture scheme, qualifying
under small scale coastal fishing activity. This resulted in a fully funded project and allowed Iain to proceed with his plans. Iain is currently being supported with advice and guidance from the Western Isles Fishermen’s Association with which HIE
maintains strong links.
Expected Outcomes | Na Builean
HIE’s contribution resulted in the start up of a new micro business in the Community Account Management area of North Uist. North Uist has an aging population and retention of young, economically active people in the community is one of the
strategic objectives set out in the Hebrides Range Taskforce (HRTF) economic diversification strategy. The inshore fishing industry is a key element of the local economy however the number of new entrants to fishing is not keeping pace
with retrials. This new business will contribute to continuing this important
economic activity.
