Land and buildings can be vital resources in the development of resilient rural communities. HIE wants to support communities throughout the Highlands and Islands to grow by helping them to acquire and develop land and other assets such as buildings. This can offer communities the freedom to develop valuable local services, create income streams and provide environmental benefits for their areas.
Our aim is to increase the role of communities in the ownership and sustainable management of land and assets for the benefit of the community. Over 485,000 acres (196,415 ha.) of land across the Highlands and Islands are now owned and/or managed by local communities ranging from large estates such as in South Uist, to smaller assets including community owned shops, industrial units and lighthouses.
The following pages provide information on the support that HIE can offer to community groups seeking to acquire local assets, and includes case studies on some of the projects we have supported recently. Members of the Community Assets Team will be happy to discuss your project ideas with you and relevant contact details can be found in the menu on the left hand side of the page.
The Community Assets Team in partnership with BIG Lottery, also delivers support to community groups applying to the Scottish Land Fund across Scotland. Further details can be found on the Scottish Land Fund page including contact details of the four staff members covering South Scotland.
