Modern Apprenticeships

You’ve heard of apprenticeships – maybe your dad was an apprent – probably your mum wasn’t! But apprenticeships have changed – that’s why they’re called Modern Apprenticeships.

Young women are becoming apprentices in their chosen areas of work – in business administration, in the travel industry, in hospitality – a few in engineering – and many others, including contact centres. In our area of Caithness and Sutherland, many young men are Modern Apprentices in engineering and the construction sector, electrical and motor vehicle.

As a Modern Apprentice, you need to be employed, and in some sectors you need to take a skills test. This makes sure you’ll be able to cope with both the practical work and the knowledge you’ll need. If you’ve got the chance of a job, make sure your employer knows about Modern Apprenticeships because there is funding available from HIE Caithness and Sutherland to help with the cost of your training and qualification. There is now no specific starting / finishing age for a Modern Apprentice.
