Fishing

Since the late 1980s there has been mounting concern about the over exploitation of many species of seafish and the consequent decline in fish stocks in European waters.

A wide and very complex range of measures has been introduced by the government in order to achieve the objectives of the EU Common Fisheries Policy.

These include:

  • Decommissioning payments
  • Restrictive vessel licensing
  • No state assistance to new builds
  • Capacity aggregation

In summary, re-distribution of the UK fishing fleet is now the only way to improve the relative position of fleets in the CASE area. Priority is therefore given to achieving and maintaining a satisfactory age profile for the fleets based within our geographical area and diversification into fishing for less pressurised stocks of fish and shellfish.
