Appointing directors

The company has a board of directors who are responsible for developing policy and strategy for the company.

Directors attend regular board meetings and participate in the company's day to day activities as and when appropriate. Directors receive no payment apart from expenses.

Although the majority of directors come from a business background, HIE Caithness and Sutherland also has a social development remit and as such the composition of the board will reflect this.

Via adverts in the local press, HIE Caithness and Sutherland invites applications from potential directors with backgrounds in all sectors together with a sound awareness of both the economy and culture of Caithness and Sutherland. A register of those interested in becoming future directors of HIE Caithness and Sutherland is kept by the company.

To be considered for inclusion on the register applicants must be resident in the Caithness and Sutherland area. Ideally applicants should hold a senior position in business in the area, be self-employed or be actively involved in the community. There is no lower age limit for directors.

The HIE Network's policy of 'appointability through openness' is designed to encourage wide community interest, nominations and self-nominations for the positions of LEC directors - through clearer public accessibility to the leadership of LECs.

The policy includes:

  • local advertising and consultation to identify a wide field of candidates for LEC board membership
  • production of job descriptions and people specifications for the LEC board posts
  • the introduction of nomination panels, containing independent local representation from outside the LEC, to sift candidate directors against these objective criteria of skills, experience and merit.

If you are interested in becoming a LEC director, or would like to nominate someone, please write to:
