The Access to Assessment programme is an initiative designed specifically for businesses and their employees throughout Caithness and Sutherland.

The fundamental aim of the initiative is to ensure that both employers and employees have access to a range of assessment services that will provide them with an opportunity to gain nationally recognised vocational qualifications for skills they already possess.

The assessment process can also be useful as a guide to planning any future training requirements the employee may have, enabling them to concentrate on any areas which would benefit from further development.

Vocational qualifications are based on competence and the ability to carry out work activities to the standard required, consistently and under normal working pressures. Occupational standards specifying the skills required for each particular job have been developed through Industry Lead Bodies.

Many companies have realised that in this age of quality assurance and the expectancy of high standards, companies striving to develop their full potential through training, will present a positive option in the eyes of potential customers and recruits. Employees also appreciate companies giving them the opportunity to improve and enhance their skills, and to have their skills formally recognised.

The process of assessment involves the individual preparing a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their proficiency in various aspects of their work.

Employers  make a financial contribution towards the cost of the assessments.

HIE Caithness and Sutherland has appointed local training providers to deliver the Access to Assessment initiative and sectors being covered include:

  • Information Technology
  • Decommissioning
  • Business Administration
  • Catering and Hospitality
  • Retailing
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Horse Care Management

Remember, investing in the skills of your staff can pay off in:

  • improved business performance
  • improved customer service
  • improved employee attitude
  • improved communication
  • improved employee performance
  • improved understanding of the business
  • reduced labour turnover

Have you worked out the costs of NOT investing in the skills of your people?
