Windswept Brewing Company
Nigel Tiddy, Managing Director of Windswept Brewing Company at Lossiemouth, set up the business in 2012 with business partner Al. After a few years of making beer on a small scale and developing local trade, it was time to take the next step.
Initially, exporting was seen as a strategy to help smooth out the peaks and troughs in local trade, and has grown to become a vital arm of business development.
Working with HIE has led to support and financial assistance with infrastructure, which has increased production capacity, while a Go Global grant has enabled them to visit companies overseas and scope out opportunities, as well as undertake label development for new products. The business has also taken advantage of several workshops, which have clarified the different stages of the exporting process. HIE also introduced Windswept to Scottish Development International (SDI), which has led to working with an inmarket specialist giving the business invaluable tailored one-to-one support.
The journey with HIE has been fantastic. They have been instrumental in helping us draw together all the funding and support streams available.
Exports currently account for 10-15% of the business. It’s given Windswept a different outlook on how to deal with bigger customers. They are currently exporting to Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Next on the list is the USA, an exciting challenge for the team, which is also developing international trade plans for Austria and Sweden. The business feels that the potential for exporting is huge.
For other businesses in the region thinking about stepping up to international trade, Nigel says:
Don’t be afraid to give it a go - the rewards are excellent.
