Reids of Caithness
Family business Reids of Caithness has been producing award-winning cakes and biscuits for almost 50 years. Re-creating recipes passed down from his great grandmother, Gary Reid has continued to build a successful business which still uses local ingredients from the company’s Thurso surroundings in many of its products.
Gary, managing director of the company, received an enquiry from an international importer whilst the company was exhibiting at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair in London a few years ago. The team carried out some initial preparation and successfully shipped their first order, which sparked their enthusiasm for the exporting process. To find out more, Gary sought the help of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and participated in an Intermediate level course called Planning for Export Success. The team also attended Market Awareness Events on Doing Business in the USA and Canada and Doing Business in Japan.
Gary said: “The professional help of HIE and Scottish Development International was extremely useful as they shared their extensive knowledge and provided our team with some invaluable insights. I am delighted we made the leap into exporting as we now cater for many export markets including Japan, China, the USA, Canada, Russia and Europe. All from our base in Thurso, it really is incredible.
HIE has really helped us because through their support we have gathered the correct information to ensure we are acting with due diligence at every stage of the exporting process. We have learnt so much about payments and have received excellent advice on a number of topics.
HIE’s market awareness workshops are half day events, involving market experts and company case studies. These are followed by one to one business clinics which provide an overview of opportunities available and an understanding of doing business in a specific country.
