Stag Bakeries

With customers in countries across Europe, America and Asia the business operations at Stornoway-based Stag Bakeries are almost unrecognisable from when doors were first opened in 1968.

Stag Bakeries had established a strong local and national reputation as a producer of world class baked goods and were keen to showcase their award winning biscuits on the world’s stage. To enable them to start selling abroad, the Stag Bakeries team secured exporting support delivered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and haven’t looked back since.

Following conversations with HIE, the team at Stag Bakeries signed up for the Preparing to Export workshop to learn more about the exporting process. The course took place over two days (it’s now also available as a compact 1 day course). This course provides a beginner’s guide to topics such as market analysis, market entry, international finance, contracts and logistics. The team also attended workshops on Doing Business in Ireland and Doing Business in the Nordics and Baltics.

Alasdair Maclean, general manager at Stag Bakeries, quotes many benefits from exporting, which include increased worldwide exposure, higher revenue streams and key business growth.

He said: “There’s so much to consider with exporting. It can be daunting, but there is a lot of support available through HIE and once you get stuck into it and put what you have learned in theory into practice, you soon reap the rewards.

Through HIE we were able to learn about what doing business internationally involves. From the background of the country to taxation laws and demographic trends, we gained access to an abundance of practical information. As well as gain more technical knowledge, we wanted to learn about the culture of the countries we were planning to export to and understand where there might be a fit for us. The Doing Business in Ireland and the Nordics and Baltics events were extremely valuable in providing these insights.

“Stag Bakeries’ exporting is progressing so well we now work with an experienced export manager whose role it is to source good quality distributors across the world and attract new business.”
