Set up in 2007 by Euan Wilson and Catherine Shearer, H&I Adventures is a guided mountain bike holiday provider based in Inverness. As well as offering tours across Scotland, H&I Adventures regularly arranges trips to mountain biking destinations across the world. Looking for assistance with their international activity, Euan and Catherine enlisted the help of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) via their HIE account manager.
H&I Adventures participated in an intensive International Strategy workshop facilitated by a tourism expert. The one to one workshop, which is delivered by experienced consultants, teaches participants how to develop an international strategy, create an action plan and set objectives to help them achieve their ambitions to expand their international activity.
Catherine commented: “The facilitator started by establishing our needs and ambitions, which allowed him to tailor the workshop to match. We then had to come up with a list of aims for the day, which the facilitator discussed with us and sometimes challenged. This we found to be very refreshing and insightful. It’s very helpful to gain an outsider’s perspective, particularly from someone who understands the market.
Our overall goal was to look at our own brand and how it could be maximised to achieve greatest impact when working with overseas sales partners, who also have their own brand identity. We completed a detailed SWOT analysis and came away from the workshop with a strong list of actions for moving forward.
The company’s reputation amongst overseas adventurers has certainly grown: one of its Highland trails was featured in the USA’s leading adventure magazine, Outside, as part of an article citing Scotland as the top mountain biking location in the world.
