The healthcare and biotechnology sectors employ around 5,000 people in the Highlands and Islands - and this number is growing.

Research bodies including the Highlands and Islands Health Research Institute, the Ness Foundation, and the Scottish Association for Marine Science boost the stature of the sector in the Highlands and Islands. Web links for these organisations are provided at the foot of this page.

The burgeoning manufacturing activity is led by Lifescan Scotland in Inverness, which manufactures diagnostic diabetes test strips, and by Equatec, which operates a pharmaceutical plant on the Isle of Lewis.

With a wide range of skills available locally, there are excellent opportunities for research, manufacturing and services.
