Skills Development Scotland
Your journey of discovery

This is a great opportunity for getting young people interested in careers and education through the medium of outdoor physical activity.

It fits in with Active Schools targets, Healthy Living, Determined to Succeed  and More Chances, More Choices programmes.

Outdoor education is a very effective medium for particular groups of pupils to learn through.

Teachers - what should the outcomes be?

  • Participants are better equipped to be more effective in their career planning and resilience;
  • Participants gain a greater sense of value of themselves – an improvement in self esteem;
  • Participants feel a sense of achievement;
  • A noticeable improvement in team working skills;
  • The ability to cope with calculated ‘risks’;
  • The sense that they can be influential in life;
  • The realisation that learning can take place in alternative settings.
  • That they have support mechanisms in place from Careers Scotland staff, and other support staff throughout their area.

When will this all take place?

We’d like this event to take place at a mutually convenient time which suits both your school timetable and our commitments.

And where will the activities take place?

We plan to do orienteering for the primary schools in the schools' own grounds (ideally we choose schools which have had their grounds marked out as orienteering courses and we adapt the course as necessary to suit our needs).

For the adventure events, there are a number of options available to us, for example: a local outdoor activities centre, possibly available through council services, or a private company. These activities can really take place anywhere suitable as long as there are sufficiently qualified instructors to deliver the activities.
