Our directors

HIE Argyll and the Islands has an active Board of 9 unpaid non-executive, locally based Directors who meet 5 times a year provide policy advice and guidance.

In line with HIE Network policy of Accountability through Openness, Directors' posts are publicly advertised and open to all living in Argyll and the Islands. A public register of Directors' interests is kept and any involvement in assisted projects is noted in the annual accounts and annual report.

Peter Timms

Professor Peter Timms (Chairman)

Managing Director of Flexible Technology Ltd

Professor Timms has been a member of the board of HIE A&I since 1998, was appointed chairman in 2004.

 He is an engineer and founder chairman and managing director of Flexible Technology Ltd, which was established in 1980. Based in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, this successful company manufactures and supplies electronic flexible printed circuits to customers in over 30 countries worldwide. Professor Timms previously held management positions at IBM in Greenock and at Thorn-EMI.

 He is active in the field of enterprise development at both a local and wider level, and was a member of the board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise until 1998 and the Scottish Industrial Development board until 2004. He currently chairs HIE Ventures Ltd and the Argyll and Islands Economic Forum.

 Professor Timms also chairs several private and listed public companies and is chairman of publicly owned David MacBrayne Ltd, Calmac Ferries Ltd and NorthLink Ferries Ltd. He is an honorary professor at the University of Glasgow Business School.

Jane MacLeod

Solicitor & Company Secretary of M & K MacLeod, Lochgilphead

Jane is a solicitor, and is company secretary of M & K MacLeod, a major builder in Argyll. Jane also runs her own private legal practice, is Secretary of Mid Argyll Chamber of Commerce. She Chairs Princes Trust Scotland – Argyll and Bute Area and the Mid Argyll Music Festival. Jane is also a Depute Lord Lieutenant for Argyll and Bute.

Ian Cleaver

Owner - Highland Heritage hotels, North Argyll

Ian is Managing Director of Highland Heritage Limited, Managing Director of Tyndrum Effluent Company Limited, Director and Vice Chair of Argyll, the Isles, Loch Lomond, Stirling and Trossachs Tourist Board. He says “all the foregoing are part-time positions as I am a full-time International Yachting Star”.

Lennie Moffat

Restauranteur

Lennie was Managing Director for TSC and took the company from start up to the sale of the business for over £30M, they employed 2,000 mostly in Argyll. Since then he joined the board of HIE AI and is also chairman of Castle Toward (Actual Reality and Learning Company) and vice-chairman of the Castle Toward Trust. He is chairman of Young Enterprise Scotland for Argyll & Bute and is also a director and part owner of a restaurant on Isle of Bute called The Pier at Craigmore. He is also a board member of The Food Certification Scotland Ltd.

 Catriona MacLennan

Director, MacLennan Motors, Tiree 

Catriona graduated as a PE and music teacher. She is a partner in an island garage and haulage company (MacLennan Motors). Based in Oban the freight service delivers to Tiree, Coll and Colonsay. She is very involved with the local community and is a director of An Talla and Tiree Community Business of which she has been chairperson for 11 years.

 Carl Reavey

Director, Portnahaven Hotel, Islay

Carl Reavey moved to Islay after a varied career as factory worker, roadie, wildlife tour guide and a spell in Los Angeles as general manager of a music business oriented electronics company. After rebuilding the Port Charlotte Hotel he is now involved in a number of charitable companies including the Museum of Islay Life, Iomairt Chille Chomain and the Islay Natural History Trust. He currently edits local newspaper “The Ileach”.

 Gordon Ross

Chief Executive, Western Ferries, Dunoon

Gordon Ross is Managing Director of Western Ferries (Clyde) Limited.  He has held his current position for the last three years having previously spent four years in the public sector with CalMac Ferries Limited and Northlink Ferries Limited. Prior to joining the maritime sector he worked in the corporate finance department of KPMG. Gordon is a qualified chartered accountant with a degree in Economics, an LLB and a Diploma of Law.

He is a board member of the Toward Trust and a Scottish Shipping Charity as well as a director of a maritime service company based in Shetland.      

Gordon is originally from Islay and spends his spare time indulging in his favoured pastimes of golf and fishing
