Argyll has a diverse economic base and while it contains many aspects which are reflected in industries prevalent throughout Scotland it also has its own unique mixture of industry sectors. These main industries reflect the rural nature of the Argyll and the Islands area and can be categorised as follows:

  • Agriculture
  • Aquaculture and Fishing
  • Forestry
  • Transport
  • Tourism
  • Food and Drink Manufacture
  • Renewable Energy

While these are typical traditional sectors within rural coastal areas they are also continually evolving as new markets and processes are tapped. Thus, in Aquaculture, salmon fish farms are being replaced with new species such as cod and the Forestry industry is finding new uses for their less valuable small wood in the emerging Biomass fuel market.
New sectors are also beginning to find a foothold in rural areas with the rise of industries in the Renewable Energy field and with the previously predominantly urban based Contact Management sector finding that rural locations increase staff loyalty and hence lower the churn factor.
It is the Enterprise company's remit to encourage these processes and help our companies find new markets and expand their product ranges.
