MIT has an open business model that welcomes partnerships and collaborations from businesses, organisations and governments around the world. HIE has a partnership relationship with MIT that benefits from the experience onsite at MIT, but also the MIT global community through their relationships with corporate sponsors and other regions and governments around the world. MIT and renowned in their field for being entrepreneurial in culture, style and delivery.
The Media Lab is a department within the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT. Devoted to research projects at the convergence of multimedia and technology, the Media Lab was widely popularized in the 1990s by business and technology publications such as Wired and Red Herring for a series of practical inventions in the fields of wireless networks, field sensing, browsers and the World Wide Web. More recently it has focused on product design more generally, particularly for technologies that address social causes.
HIE’s relationship with the Media Lab has proved successful as a conduit for Highlands & Islands companies to gain access to a global technology research lab which has not been available in the region to date. In addition to developing knowledge transfer and technology transfer projects, research trials, researcher placements and licensing deals, a successful output of the relationship with the Media Lab has been the creation of Distance Lab – the Highlands & Islands technology research institute based in Forres, Moray.
HIE sponsors the MIT Media Lab which focuses on interdisciplinary research. This generally does not involve directly developing core technologies, but rather developing applications of those technologies, or combining those technologies in innovative and non intuitive ways. As part of the sponsorship, HIE has consortium membership access to researchers, projects, world renowned research group directors, events and the vibrant network of innovative thinking and cutting edge technology developments. The relationship with the Media Lab also enables HIE and it’s businesses to access the wider network of other Media Lab corporate sponsors such as Bank of America, Siemens, BT, Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba and Plymouth Rock Studios, Cisco, Google, PepsiCo, Toyota and Steelcase.
HIE can offer Highlands & Islands businesses many opportunities to engage with the Media Lab. For further information, please contact John Mackenzie at Highlands & Islands Enterprise at john.mackenzie@hient.co.uk or on 01463 244520
