Our priorities

Developing growth sectors - food and drink

The Highlands and Islands is known for its natural larder and food and drink businesses from the region are renowned for their high-quality products, which have a strong competitive advantage associated to place, people and provenance.

The sector has strong ambitions for growth, and HIE are committed to work in collaboration with industry and public sectors partner in the Scotland Food and Drink Partnership to create the vision and realise the ambitions set out in the national food and drink strategy ‘Ambition 2030’.  Today, the industry in Scotland is worth £14 billion and the strategy aims to double the value of the industry to £30 billion by 2030, through driving growth via innovation, integrating supply chains, investing in people and skills, and focusing on market growth opportunities domestically and internationally.

Whilst food and drink has become the best performing industry in Scotland and is our region’s largest growth sector, there is an ongoing need for businesses to innovate, to adopt new technologies and to invest in skills and leadership to increase efficiency, productivity and competitiveness.  Working with ambitious and capable businesses, we offer one to many and tailored support to address barriers to growth and to stimulate and support opportunities for sustainable growth.
