Thurso Cinema wins cash boost at Scottish EDGE Awards

20 February 2013

The Thurso Cinema has won a £50,000 grant in the Scottish EDGE funding award scheme.

Launched in October 2012, the competition received 235 applications and 100 of these were shortlisted to pitch their ideas in person in January. Applications for funding were considered by a Dragon’s Den style Investment Panel, composed of Scotland’s leading business people, who selected 20 finalists to go on to pitch for the prize money.

The two-screen, 250 seat ciinema, opened last July saving local residents a 109-mile trip to the nearest picture house in Inverness.  The money will be used to redevelop the full frontage of the cinema and to create a conferencing and events facility, as part of broader plans to establish a digital entertainment centre in the town.

The cash boost is part of more than £540,000 of funding which was awarded to the country’s brightest and most innovative start-ups. The cinema was one of three winners who received the full amount sought.
