Technology tips for budding creatives at Stornoway workshop

04 February 2015

An award-winning scriptwriter and novelist and an influential producer and pioneer of cross-media storytelling, are just two of the speakers taking part in a free workshop in Stornoway this month.

People and businesses in the Outer Hebrides interested in emerging technologies in the Creative Industries are being given the opportunity to get tips and advice from these and other industry insiders at the top of their game.

Scotland’s largest Creative Industries festival, XpoNorth, is heading to Stornoway later this month in conjunction with creative workshop The Pixel Lab.

The XpoNorth Goes West mini-conference at An Lanntair on February 18 aims to give artists, designers, filmmakers and others with an interest in emerging technologies the opportunity to hear from and speak to internationally-renowned industry professionals.

Subjects will include brand alignment, sponsorship, film making, revenue streams and transmedia.

There will also be tips from the horse’s mouth on upcoming opportunities at the Guardian Edinburgh International Film and Television Festival and one-to-ones with the experts.

Registration for the Stornoway event is free and open to anyone working in creative industries interested in emerging technologies, interactivity and cross platform approaches to developing new products and getting them to market, or building IP and their media brand.

John MacDonald from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), said: “The XpoNorth event in Stornoway is an exceptional opportunity for anyone working in the media who is looking to expand into new technologies and increase their brand reach. Having speakers of the calibre of the Pixel Lab team come to An Lanntair to share their knowledge and experience is quite special, meaning this is an event not to be missed.”

Attendees will also learn more about applying to take part in the Pixel Lab, coming to Scotland for the first time later this year. The ultimate workshop spanning four months, the Pixel Lab will equip those working in the industry with the skills needed to create, finance and distribute stories in today’s media climate.

Speakers at An Lanntair will include Liz Rosenthal, the CEO of Pixel Lab and programme director for Digimart’s Global Digital Distribution Summit in Montreal; Sean Coleman, scriptwriter, novelist and producer, Campbell Glennie, the Director of Talent Schemes at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival and branding specialist Alex Howell, Director Rawk Music and Azure North Ltd.

At the event, Sean Coleman will give a case study of his award-winning transmedia project, Netwars, available on five different platforms - an online world, novels, game, app and shortly, a film.

Transmedia activity looks at new ways for businesses to create, finance and distribute products, across different platforms. For a producer, this involves creating content that will allow them to engage with consumers across the technologies and platforms that they use in their everyday lives.

The Pixel Lab provides participants with an unrivalled understanding of how a strategic cross-platform approach to story development will help develop their projects, brands and audience base.

XpoNorth is funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). It aims to boost creative careers in screen, broadcast and music, as well as crafts and publishing, across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The Stornoway workshop is being held with the support of Creative Europe – the MEDIA Programme of the EU, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Creative Scotland, Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund as part of A Bigger Future 2, Scottish Development International and MG ALBA.
