State Aid public consultation published for community broadband project in Skye

07 June 2016

Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) is carrying out a State Aid public consultation to assess commercial plans for broadband in the north of Skye.

Local group North Skye Broadband (NSB) has been exploring a potential community-led project to deliver a superfast broadband solution in partnership with CBS. Postcode areas have been identified as part of the project’s scope. These areas are unlikely to be served by the Scottish Government’s Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband (DSSB) fibre roll out programme. The consultation aims to confirm an intervention area so that the project can progress and contract a supplier for the network.

In order for CBS to allocate public funding to a project, State Aid approval is required through a decision granted by the European Commission. In May 2016, a new State Aid approval framework, the National Broadband Scheme was approved by the European Commission. The National Broadband Scheme is managed by Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK).

Suppliers are invited to respond to the State Aid public consultation by Friday 8th July. You can find more information here.
