Stag Biscuits Fly High at Edinburgh Festival

18 August 2010

Biscuits from an award winning bakery in the Isle of Lewis have been selected to feature at the Edinburgh Festival's unique culinary event 'Festival in the Sky'.

Four varieties of water biscuits from Stag Bakeries have been chosen to be part of a dining experience which whisks diners up 100 feet in the air where they're treated to a whole range of tasty treats including smoked venison and cheeses.

Sixteen chefs from top Scottish venues will host the chef flight on a suspended dining table above Princes Street Gardens during the month of August.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has been working with Stag Bakeries to progress their plans for growth and commissioned a consultant to work through the details of the company's marketing strategy. With this assistance, the company approached Braehead Foods based in Kilmarnock whose Michelin Star chef particularly enjoyed their water biscuits which were selected to be part of the cheeseboard at the Festival in the Sky.

Donnie Macleod, general manager of Stag Bakeries said: "We are extremely proud to be associated with such a prestigious event and are pleased that our biscuits were chosen on their merits for this rare culinary experience. It gives us much satisfaction to be told by those who know excellent products that our Stornoway water biscuits are the best they have tasted."

HIE's business development manager Alasdair Maclean commented: "We have been working with Stag Bakeries on their marketing planning which has helped them begin targeting the right customers and better position their products. This is the start of the process for them and as a result the 'Festival in the Sky' will build national customer awareness of their products and brand."

Stag Bakeries produces a wide range of other products including bread, rolls, oatcakes, and local favourite, Stag Biscuits at their new custom fitted premises at Cannery Road, Stornoway. The business is in the process of further market development and hope to offer a graduate placement in the next couple of months to further assist in implementation of this strategy.

Last year, the company achieved the Quality Standard 'SALSA' for the second time and are actively using the accreditation as a marketing tool. Awards have also been received annually since 2001 for Stag Bakeries products from the Guild of Fine Food Retailers Great Taste Awards.
