An Alness manufacturer is looking to expand into new international markets with an investment plan of almost £1m for 2011.
Porex Technologies Ltd manufactures high performance porous plastic films that are used in the Life Science and Industrial markets. Functions include filtration (particle retention) and venting (gas diffusion / thermal management).
The investments are based around the purchase of the manufacturing facility, which was previously leased from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), and creation of new Project and Development positions within the company.
HIE has awarded the company £76,680 of funding towards revenue costs to increase and develop international activity and develop new markets. This complements a £175,000 award through Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) from Scottish Development International (SDI) in January 2011 for capital projects.
The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Porex Corporation, which has its headquarters in Atlanta Georgia, USA. Porex serves over 1,300 customers in more than 65 countries worldwide from manufacturing facilities in the United States, Germany, Scotland, and Malaysia and in 2011 celebrated its 50th year in business.
The Porex facility in Alness serves global markets with a team boasting over 20 years of experience in design, development, production, and distribution. The Alness team specialise in Poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE), which is used in a broad range of medical, industrial, and high technology applications. PTFE is inert, making it un-reactive to most chemicals, and it can work in high processing and operating temperature environments.
Applications include filters and vents within car electronics and lighting components, membranes for SPE chromatography and medical venting membranes for anti-microbial protection.
Nicola Ewing from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said: "This funding from HIE and RSA will have anchored the business in Alness and also helps the company look to expand its international markets from this base. Porex Technologies Ltd has real ambitions to grow the Alness team and this is the first stage in realising these aspirations."
Andrew Maclennan, Managing Director of Porex Technologies Ltd said "I am very proud of our business and the year on year success we have delivered in challenging economic conditions. The financial support from HIE and Scottish Development International has helped ground the business in Scotland and it supports our growth plans. The focus is strongly on increasing the growth speed of the company and with our expanding global sales and committed workforce I believe the opportunity is huge."
