Nominations Sought for the 2013 Gaelic Business of the Year

19 March 2013

Issued by Comunn na Gàidhlig

Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) is now seeking nominations for the 2013 Gaelic Business of the Year award.

They are looking for businesses that use Gaelic as an asset and that can best demonstrate a strong use of Gaelic among staff, and with customers, which has a high level of visibility of the language within the company and which uses Gaelic in branding/marketing of the company or its products.  Businesses making strong progress towards these objectives are also eligible.

The competition is run by CnaG as part of its development contract with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and this is the fourth year the competition has been held.  Last year’s winner was Acair Ltd, a Gaelic books publisher based in Stornoway.  As well as the status that comes with the award, there are also useful prizes with £3,000 going to the winner and £1,500 and £500 going to second and third places respectively.  Agnes Rennie, Manager of Acair Ltd, said:

“We were delighted to learn that Acair had been successful in last year’s competition.  As a small company the prize money was extremely helpful and we used it to purchase a new computer for our designer.  I think it also gave us all a confidence boost to think that organizations such as CnaG and HIE valued the work being undertaken by us, and had recognized this by awarding the 2012 Gaelic Business of the Year title to Acair Ltd.”

Donald MacNèill, Chief Executive of CnaG said:

“The competition does a number of things - it gives recognition to businesses who actively use Gaelic as an asset which enhances their business, it inspires other businesses who use Gaelic in some small way to perhaps do more and it also promotes Gaelic to the wider community, affirming how important and useful the Gaelic language is in business today.  We are proud of this competition and grateful to Highlands and Islands Enterprise for enabling us to run it.”

Neil Ross, Head of Community Growth at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said:

”HIE recognises that Gaelic is at the very heart of the majority of communities across our network area. HIE is  currently leading on research that will illuminate the economic and social impact of Gaelic as an asset, so that we can better support businesses to take advantage of the potential. We are delighted to be working with CnaG to identify and celebrate businesses already using and benefiting from Gaelic as an asset.

Competition terms:

  • The competition is open to businesses based within the HIE area
  • Businesses must operate on a stand-alone basis rather than as part of a wider group
  • Businesses should not be part of the operation of local authorities, enterprise companies or organisations funded by public agencies.
  • Nominations must be with CnaG by 28th June 2013.

More information on the competition, and the application packs, can be found on the CnaG website or by getting in touch with the CnaG offices in Stornoway on 01851 701802 or Inverness  on 01463 234138.
