Mapping the seaweed resources of the Outer Hebrides

13 June 2011

A report outlining the natural seaweed resource around the Outer Hebrides has been published.

The work was commissioned by Scottish Enterprise with support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise through the ITI Energy Research and Development programme to evaluate existing resources and the viability of sustainable harvesting.

The Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) led on two months of survey work and consultation on the resource, focusing on Ascophyllum nodosum (egg rack) around the coastline of the islands.  The report maps where the seaweed is to be found and in what quantities, and compares the figures to Scottish Seaweed Research Association findings in the 1940s.
