Five ambitious companies from the Highlands and Islands have been recognised in the 2012 Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards.

The New Product Marketing Award went to the Shetland Livestock Marketing Group for its campaign to promote native Shetland lamb.

At the other end of the HIE patch, first place in the Food Tourism category went to the Puffer Bar and Restaurant which is situated in the small island of Easdale just off Oban.

Loch Duart Ltd, based in South Uist and Sutherland won the Fish category for its smoked salmon range including Oak Roasted Flaky Salmon and Hot Smoked Salmon with Honey and Thyme.

The Success Through Working in Parnerships went to the Orkney Fisherman's Society while Cullisse based at Nigg, near Tain won the Soups, Preserves and Accompaniments category with its Mixed Pepper and Spice Marinade and Highland Rapeseed Oil - fast becoming the foodie's oil of choice following appearances on chef Nigel Slater's television show.

Head of food, drink and tourism at HIE Chris Taylor said: "This event, which is the Oscars in terms of Scottish Food & Drink, really brings home the quality of products we have in the Highlands and Islands. HIE is delighted to be working with our industry partners, Scotland Food & Drink to help many companies in every part of the Highlands and Islands to increase sales and reach new markets. This is a fantastic success for the region and our congratulations go to all the winners and nominees.

The awards were announced last night (Thursday 24 May) in Dunblane. The entries were judged by a panel comprising industry experts and journalists and the hotly contested product awards were presented to some of the country's most innovative and exciting companies.
