HIE welcomes news that Katie Morag is ready for the small screen

01 November 2013

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is welcoming the news that Katie Morag, the new CBeebies drama based on the hugely popular books created by author and illustrator Mairi Hedderwick, is to premiere on national television at the end of this week.

Produced by Highland-based Scottish indie Move On Up, Katie Morag is a 26-part series for CBeebies. Filming for the 26-part series took place on the isle of Lewis over four months using both studio facilities on the island as well as the beautiful Hebridean landscape – a key part of the Katie Morag adventures.

Katie Morag is a small red-haired girl who lives with her family on the magical Scottish Island of Struay. Although she lives in a unique setting, her stories portray some of the enduring themes of childhood.

Mairi Buchanan from Highlands and Islands Enterprise said: "We are delighted that we will finally see Katie Morag brought to life by CBeebies and Move On Up. By supporting the production company to film in an island location using the scenics, the studio and all that we have to offer here in the Outer Hebrides, we hope that its broadcast will highlight the area as a base for other major productions as well as boosting both the local supply chain and tourism industry. Mairi Hedderwick did a wonderful job of highlighting the scenery, landscape and culture of the Scottish islands in her books and we have no doubt that Move On Up will have achieved the same. Our support for the Creative Industries sector recognises not only its social value to local communities, but also its potential to drive economic growth."

Katie Morag is a Move on Up production, directed by Don Coutts and produced by Margaret Matheson.  The Executive Producers are Lindy Cameron for Move on Up and Sara Harkins and Michael Towner for CBeebies. The series has also received support from BBC Scotland, Creative Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Katie Morag will be broadcast at 5.25pm on Sunday 3 November on CBeebies.
