The announcement today (Wednesday 4 November) that British Airways is to launch a daily service between Inverness and London Heathrow, has been welcomed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) as a boost for the region’s economy.
HIE has been working with VisitScotland and Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), operator of Inverness Airport, to help BA establish the new service.
The airline will operate an Airbus A320 carrying 138 passengers and the new daily service will begin on 3 May 2016. From Heathrow, passengers can connect to more than 125 destinations worldwide, adding to the already well-used international connections through Dublin, Gatwick and Amsterdam.
Commenting on the announcement today, Alex Paterson HIE chief executive said: “This is excellent news, which will open up new economic opportunities for the region. We are sure the new service will be of great interest to existing businesses and potential inward investors. We are in discussion with HIAL and will be keen to work with them to ensure the new service is popular and sustainable. Meanwhile we look forward to welcoming British Airways back to Inverness in 2016.”
