Professor Lorne Crerar, Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) will officially open six new workshops today (Wednesday 18 September) at Morefield industrial Estate on the outskirts of Ullapool.
The two-acre site was purchased by Ullapool Harbour Trust in 2009 and represents a further stage in the development of Morefield Industrial Estate. The completed site is a mix of commercial land and industrial units and was built by local firm, Ullapool Construction.
HIE has supported Ullapool Harbour Trust with a £220,000 grant towards the £1.3m project.
Prof. Crerar, said: “I am delighted to be opening these new premises today. This ambitious project is the result of local demand for workshop units in the Ullapool area which is very encouraging. We anticipate that it will bring a range of economic benefits as well as promote job creation and security in this economically fragile region. These new facilities create opportunities for businesses looking to expand as well as those looking to locate to Ullapool.
“HIE recognises that strong communities are essential to the continued success of the Highlands and Islands and has worked closely with Ullapool Harbour Trust to broaden its harbour activities and assist the business to diversify into other sectors to secure long term sustainability.”
Morefield provides Ullapool Harbour Trust with the opportunity to generate income from an alternative source alongside traditional ferry and fishing dues. Three of the workshops are initially scheduled to accommodate the fishing-related sector with the remaining three available for general commercial occupancy.
