From Thurso to Campbeltown: Commonwealth Games ceremonies come to local cinemas

22 July 2014

HIE hopes to facilitate mass participation by screening opening and closing ceremonies for free across the country

The Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies are to be screened live for free across the country thanks to economic and community development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Taking place in 21 cinemas across various towns and cities including Thurso, Oban, Edinburgh and Campbeltown, the screenings hope to bring communities together to enjoy the Commonwealth Games. By getting people involved beyond the main event in Glasgow, it is hoped that people unable to attend can experience some of the atmosphere by watching with other members of their community.

The screenings are free for anyone to attend and are being managed by HIE and hosted across HIE’s service area and beyond.

Claire Simers from HIE said: “We wanted to get communities beyond the main Commonwealth Games involved and for them to experience this major event for themselves. By screening the opening and closing ceremonies at local cinemas, it’s just one of the events we hope will bring people together and instil a sense of pride in the Games and Scotland itself."

The opening ceremony will be screened at the below cinemas at 9pm on Wednesday the 23rd of July 2014. The closing ceremony will be screened on Sunday the 3rd of August.
