03 August 2012

Disney-Pixar's latest animated adventure Brave will premiere tonight at the newly opened Phoenix Cinema in Oban.

The old Highland Theatre was bought over by a community group two years ago and has been stripped back ready to emerge as the Oban Phoenix Cinema.

The venture to reopen the cinema has been led by a community group of volunteers. The campaign to save the small cinema has also been backed by Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench who regularly holidays in the Oban area who has agreed to become a patron of the cinema.

New flooring has been installed in the George Street cinema auditorium and 150 brand new seats emblazoned with the Oban Phoenix Cinema logo have been fitted.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Argyll and Bute Council have supported plans to open the cinema along with donations from the local community.

Claire Hannah, development manager at HIE and the group's account manager, commented: "The Oban Phoenix group has run a spectacular campaign to purchase and reopen the cinema in Oban. It is a real testament to what can be achieved when a community pulls together for a particular cause. To be reopening with the premiere of Disney-Pixar's Brave is a real achievement and we're delighted to have been able to support the cinema group in realising its ambitions and creating a valuable asset for the local community."

Campbell Cameron chairman of Oban Phoenix Cinema, said: "We are delighted to have raised the money to get the community project going and also to bring the people of Oban, Lorn and the Isles together, because it is really important that we have a community involvement here. This is going to be a really exciting night tonight."

Councillor Louise Glen-Lee, director of Oban Phoenix Cinema, said: "Our dream was to make a cinema that Oban can be proud of and it is wonderful to see it finished. This cinema is owned and belongs to the community and we very much look forward to everyone coming along to see the latest movie tonight."
