Communities across Shetland are being offered the opportunity to discover more about ‘alternative finance’ and what it could mean for their community at free event.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Voluntary Action Shetland are hosting the event on Tuesday 17 February at South Nesting Public Hall.

As the public purse tightens and grant funding becomes more scarce, community organisations have increasingly had to seek alternative sources of finance to fund community projects.

The purpose is to help communities gain a better understanding of the ‘alternative finance’ opportunities available and that by thinking outside the box they can gain greater ownership and a more direct voice in what happens in their communities.

Hot Tap Media, Social Investment Scotland and Community Shares Scotland are all participating at the event and will be providing information on Crowdfunding, business loans for the Third Sector and community share schemes.

Rachel Hunter, HIE’s Area Manager said:

“Over the last few years we have witnessed a reduction in public sector funding for community organisations and social enterprises.

“The traditional route of grant application is becoming more challenging to source and more organisations will have to pursue alternative sources of funding to finance their projects.

“It can be daunting for groups to go down this route and that’s why I would encourage any community group, trust, committee or social enterprise looking for funding to attend our ‘alternative finance’ event and find how these types of funding options could help them.”
