Are you thinking of exporting for the first time, or feel your business has the potential to grow internationally?

Our one day Preparing to Export workshop can help you develop your business abroad.

The introductory programme is loaded with practical advice on all aspects of international business to help you build the skills and confidence to succeed in overseas markets.

Our experts will work with you to develop a tailor-made Export Plan to put your skills and knowledge into action. The export plan is a practical guide that is unique to your business. Once complete, you can share your plan with a designated adviser for feedback and comment.

Key areas covered include market analysis and entry, international finance, contracts and logistics, to ensure you lay the right foundations for selling your products and services abroad.

Key areas covered:

  • Market analysis - why export? The importance of export planning, selecting target markets, market research, basic legal issues, protecting your intellectual property, Brexit
  • Market entry - routes to market and the different options available, agencies, distribution, licensing and partnership agreements, international marketing and sales, websites, e-commerce and social media, visiting the market, exhibitions and trade shows
  • International finance, contracts and logistics, new exporter’s checklist, budgeting and costing, export pricing, incoterms, vat, customs duties, tariffs, getting paid and currency, contracts and international terms and conditions, logistics and transportation
  • 1-2-1 company support and preparation of export action plan - all attendees will be helped to prepare an export action plan to help them achieve their objectives and understand how this fits into their overall strategy for exporting
  • Presentation of individual export action plans and feedback

This workshop is delivered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in partnership with Scottish Development International and is part funded through the European Regional Development Fund.

The course is free of charge but is a form of EU State Aid and counts towards your overall De Minimis Aid allowance. Each company is allowed a total of €200,000 in De Minimis Aid over a three-year period (with a lower limit for fisheries and some other categories).
