Cloud against a clear blue sky

One thing that affects us all in Scotland is the weather and it’s also one of the first things people talk about. In this module you will learn some basic phrases for talking about the weather in Gaelic. Be warned, however, that like in all languages, Gaelic has many variations on how to talk about the weather - whether it be sunny or showery!

First of all, let's be positive - it doesn't rain all the time! So, try these out.

Tha i àlainn! It's beautiful!

Tha i blàth! It's warm!

Tha i brèagha! It's lovely!

Tha i ciùin! It's calm!

Tha i grianach! It's sunny!

Tha i teth! It's hot!

Tha i tioram! It's dry!

Now for those rare occasions when the weather isn't so good:

Tha i ceòthach! It's misty!

Tha i fiadhaich! It's wild!

Tha i fliuch! It's wet!

Tha i fuar! It's cold!

Tha i gaothach! It's windy!

Tha i mosach! It's nasty weather!

Tha i stoirmeil! It's stormy!

Now test how much you have learned with the tools below.
