Orkney's economy has traditionally been based on farming and fishing, but the tourism and food processing industries are rapidly becoming significant employers - capitalising on the islands' unspoilt environment.

Unemployment remains low and Orcadians enjoy a relatively high quality of life. But the challenge facing HIE Orkney is to help develop enterprise through Orkney, particularly in the North and South Isles, and to ensure that the local workforce is prepared for diversification should any sectoral downturns occur. The protection and enhancement of Orkney's environment and culture is also a priority.

HIE Orkney's objective is to stimulate the growth of the economy by providing training and other business development services to people and businesses in the islands.
