Out of the office today means taking the office with you. And buying a digital device that has only one trick up its sleeve is also becoming more of a rarity too.
The latest to join the multi-tasking revolution is the much loved Blackberry which can now make Voice over IP phone calls thanks to a new web application from internet communications company, Raketu.
Being a web-based service there is no software to download or install, and for business users there is in addition the ability to send SMS text messages globally at competitively low rates and send email.
Greg Parker, president and CEO of Raketu, said: "With over 12 million users of the BlackBerry worldwide, the introduction of our Raketu BlackBerry application marks our definitive entry into the mobile business market.
"For businesses whose employees initiate a significant number of international calls from their BlackBerry mobile devices, Raketu's BlackBerry application is a great way to reduce monthly calling costs."
'Free calling zones' have been set up in over 40 countries to enable users to make free international phone calls.
Meanwhile, if you are not a Blackberry addict, an alternative worth considering for VoIP on the hoof is the new EnGenius handset that can make VoIP calls from anywhere using a wireless network connection.
The EnGenius SI-680H phone has been created to be of most use to workers outside of the office, who can use its roaming capabilities to find and access available web networks. Especially useful, say the makers, is the phone’s capacity to slot into any wireless local area network with ease, allowing office calls to be handled by the phone as well.
Other key features of the £100 phone include support for the latest SIP standards, 128-bit security encoding and call forwarding, transfer and history.
