The green Highlands and Islands rewarded

A third of the UK’s top 50 greenest hotels are located in the Highlands and Islands.

The Gold Register awards for eco-friendliness have been inaugurated by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, with the winners drawn up after extensive research by a team of independent inspectors. Hotels had to demonstrate that at least 60 out of 120 environmental measures – from energy saving lightbulbs to recycling and green purchasing – were being implemented.

Of the 50 hotels chosen for the new green awards, 35 were in Scotland, including 16 in the Highlands and Islands. Rewarded for their green credentials are:

Herrislea House, Tingwall, Shetland

Hilton Colyumbridge Hotel, Aviemore

Isles of Glencoe Hotel and Leisure Centre, Fort William

Langass Lodge, Locheport, North Uist

The Torridon, Achnasheen

Park Hotel, Thurso

Pennyghael Hotel, Mull

Pool House Hotel, Poolewe

Stein Inn, Waternish, Skye

Sunny Brae Hotel, Nairn

Tables Hotel, Dunvegan, Skye

The Ballachulish Hotel, Fort William

The Foveran Hotel, Kirkwall, Orkney
