Awards presented at Inverness volunteer recruitment fair

Awards presented at Inverness volunteer recruitment fair
06 June 2007

How to register as a volunteer and what opportunities are available were some of the questions answered at a volunteer recruitment fair last week (Friday June 1) in Inverness.

The fair took place at the city's Town House and was open to anyone interested in hearing more about volunteering opportunities.

Organised by Volunteering Highland with assistance from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), up to 30 local voluntary organisations displayed community volunteering information on stands.

The recruitment fair was held as part of Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) - the UK's annual celebration of the work that volunteers do, with events held across the country to recognise, recruit and reward volunteers.

Information was available for people who want to assist with DIY and gardening, drama activities or to take a neighbour out shopping amongst much more.

Audrey MacIver, head of Strengthening Communities at HIE Inverness and East Highland presented certificates to Befrienders Highland and Shopmobility for their successful completion of the good practice standards scheme.

The scheme recognises organisations that have all the essential procedures and policies to support and safeguard volunteers.

Audrey MacIver said: "Most of the organisations that took part in this exercise were quite well established but nevertheless found it to be beneficial. HIE is now considering looking at a second phase that may target newer organisations, increasing the retention of volunteers as well as encouraging others to volunteer."

Sarah Barker, manager of Volunteering Highland, said:  "We recognise the valuable part that volunteers play within the community and in voluntary groups, and feel that their time and effort is worthwhile.  We need to increase the number of volunteers in the Highlands whilst making sure that they have a good experience."

In addition, certificates were presented to members of Volunteering Highland's youth panel which consists of nine young people between the ages 12 and 23.

Volunteering Highland registered more than 600 volunteers last year and has 800 opportunities available.

HIE has funded ten organisations within the Highlands to achieve this award with support from their local volunteer centres.
