Tourism industry squaring the circle

Tourism industry squaring the circle
27 April 2007

Tourism in places of outstanding natural and historical heritage like the Highlands and Islands is today trying to square the circle.

The priceless heritage of the Highlands and Islands is undoubtedly an important part of their tourism offering and branding. But this widespread appeal places demands upon that which needs to be protected. Increasingly, physical access by tourists has to be managed to balance the issues of environmental and cultural sensitivity and changing land use.

This dichotomy is the nub of Getting there - future access to special places, the three day annual conference of the Tourism Society being held on 16-18 May at The Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort.

The conference will tackle the question of tourism and global concerns about climate change, and how this may influence future access, especially in more remote regions. Under review will be how visitor management, new technology and carbon-conscious tourism policies could help resolve these dilemmas.

With its roots in both business and academic sectors, the event will have something of importance to offer to practitioners, policy-makers, consultants, researchers and teachers alike.

Taking place over three days, the conference will include:

• sessions on issues of access and visitor management
• study visits around the conference themes
• a special conference dinner in the highest restaurant in the UK
• final day focusing on role of technology in enabling heritage access and how tourism can adopt carbon-conscious solutions to the climate change challenge.

The keynote speakers are:

• Peter Lederer, chairman of VisitScotland
• Dr Nancy Arsenault, Royal Roads University, Canada
• Prof. Sandy Pentland, MIT
• And Prof. Stephen Tinsley, Sustainable Development Research Centre, UHI
