Moby web price battle sparked
16 April 2007

A price war is looming for mobile phone internet access. Mobile network operator 3 has fired the opening shot with a new flat rate £5 per month package.

The service is capped to a maximum of 1GB of data per month and is only available to subscribers with a minimum £15 per month contract. 3’s move is now expected to spark price cuts by other major mobile networks.

An estimated 14 million people use their mobile phones for internet access to check web mail, news, RSS feeds, social networking, auction and other favourite sites. But a further 26 million mobile phone users have the ability to browse the web from their phone but don’t bother due to the expense. That could be about to change, especially if the other mobile network operators follow 3’s lead.
