The next generation of local exchanges that route calls over the internet instead of using switches and cable is now upon us. But the network upgrade, dubbed by BT as 21CN (21st Century Network) is a massive undertaking and will take from now until 2011 to complete.
In an effort to allay any fears and confusion about this root and branch transformation, BT, in consultation with regulator, Ofcom, have launched a 21CN web site to give customers more information about their local exchange. switchedonuk.org offers information on how the 21CN will affect homes, businesses and broadband. The key tool is a local exchange look up panel designed to give users an indication of their likely switch on date.
Broadband and ISDN connections will have switch on dates separate from voice calls. Indicative dates for both broadband and ISDN connections are to be announced soon. According to BT: “Some broadband services may remain on the old network and others will be switched-on to the new network over time. However, all broadband services will continue to work normally.”
There will be some service interruptions in the months and weeks leading up to the work and on the night your local exchange is switched-on. These interruptions will typically last between three and thirty minutes. However, for the period these service interruptions last, you won’t be able to make calls any calls using a landline. This includes calls to the emergency services.
BT is advising customers to have their mobile phone charged in readiness, and, if a pay-as-you-go mobile, to ensure there is usable credit on the phone. Mobiles are not affected by 21CN as they will continue to rely on fixed masts for their signal. For consumers and small businesses without mobile phones or in areas with a weak signal, the advice is to call 0800 030 4000 ahead of time.
Because of the reliance many businesses place in high speed communications and technology, BT has been carrying out extensive testing and concludes, “It’s very unlikely that any of your office equipment or technology will be affected.” For peace of mind, check out the ‘Your Office Equipment’ page.
On the switch on date, a data and network services freeze will occur and some types of broadband services and applications may not work with the new network. Special provision will be put in place by service provider if this affects their customers, so find out if your services are included.
Dates for individual local exchanges will be subject to change, so it is worth checking regularly. However, BT will be sending customers an information pack about a week before their lines are due to go 21CN.
