Improving logistics and driving out costs in the forestry and timber supply chain  will be the focus of the next Highland Forest Industries Cluster (HIFIC) meeting next Tuesday, September 26,  at Dingwall Auction Mart. Finnish expert Tore Hognas will highlight areas where the Scottish industry can benefit from Scandinavian innovation.

Chairman Steve Conolly explained: "We are delighted that Tore Hognas will be speaking. He has an in depth knowledge of the timber industry in Finland and the UK, and is seen as a key player in improving forestry logistics. He will explain how the Finnish forest industry has been able to reduce costs and improve profitability, which is particularly important for us given the rising fuel costs we face."

Also speaking will be a representative from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency on how operators can ensure they are working within the recently introduced Working Time legislation. Claire Glaister from Rural Development Initiative will provide an update on the ForStart HI scheme, which has provided a training subsidy to encourage much needed new entrants into the industry.

Bob Stubbs, senior key industries development manager with Highlands and Islands Enterprise said: "I hope as many people in the industry as possible come on Tuesday. Apart from gaining useful insight from these expert speakers, it offers an opportunity to share experiences and contacts with others working in the same field."

Registration at the event starts at 5pm with business beginning at 5.30 and concluding at 7.30pm followed by a buffet, allowing the opportunity to network.
