| Good ideas needed to celebrate Shetland culture | |
| 12 September 2006 Applications are being sought for funding to celebrate Shetland's culture as part of the wider Highland 2007 programme of events. Highlands 2007 aims to promote the Highlands and Islands as a great place to live and to visit through showcasing its culture past, present and future. As part of this, funding has been made available by Shetland Islands Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) for a Shetland community programme. Sarah Johnston from Shetland Enterprise explained: "We'd like to hear from people who have an idea for an event or project that will touch, inspire or entertain its target audience and create a positive impression of Shetland." Shetland Community Programme aims to generate economic and social benefits for Shetland and for Scotland and to contribute to the work of other agencies in promoting the islands as a vibrant and prosperous place to live and visit through the wealth of cultural activity in the area. It's hoped that some of the events will establish cultural partnerships across Scotland that will endure beyond 2007. Projects or events must relate to one or more of six strands of culture: arts; heritage; sport; language; environment; and science. Further, they should focus on one or more of the seven stated themes of Highland 2007: youth; local dialect; creativity; access and inclusiveness; Shetland as an inspirational place; homecoming or the re-interpretation of traditional local icons. Only Shetland-based not-for-profit organisations can apply and should submit a copy of their constitution with their application. Funding will be available for running costs e.g. actors' fees etc, not for acquisition of permanent assets, and all applicants should apply for match funding from Shetland Islands Council or Shetland Amenity Trust. For more details and application forms contact Shetland Enterprise, Toll Clock Shopping Centre, 26 North Road, Lerwick, Shetland ZE1 ODE. Tel: 01595 693177. | |
