Map will plot social enterprise course
29 August 2006

An exercise to map the extent and nature of the social economy in Shetland begins this week with a questionnaire being sent out to over 600 community groups working across Shetland to provide services in their communities.

The social economy sector is the network of voluntary groups, community enterprises and charitable organisations which play a significant part in Shetland life. They are businesses with primarily social objectives.  Any surplus made by them is reinvested in the business or local community.

It's hoped the survey will establish a more comprehensive picture of the scope, shape and value of the social economy and provide a better understanding of both the ambitions of and challenges facing local organisations.

The results will be used to plan the training and other support needs of community organisations.

The survey is being funded by Shetland Enterprise and other partner agencies of the Shetland Community Regeneration Partnership (CRP) which include Shetland Islands Council, the Crofters Commission, Shetland Health Board, Hjatland Housing Association and Shetland Council of Social Service (SCSS).

Members of the CRP are encouraging all community groups to complete the survey, which is being carried out by consultants, Reference.

Catherine Hughson, manager of SCSS said: "We look forward to the results of the survey which will enable us to assess the economic value of the sector to the economy."

Katrina Wiseman of Shetland Enterprise added, "Through this study we can identify the needs of the social economy, and draw up a three year plan of support in response to these needs."
