One of the expedition's key partners / supporting organisations is the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. This short update tells you a little about the trust's work and explains how it helps many different people achieve their ambitions.

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has been shaping the world of exploration in the UK, through the award of highly prestigious travelling fellowships for many years.

Anna McCormack, as expedition leader was awarded a 2006 Travel Fellowship from the trust, in support of this entire venture. When the trust came on board as the expedition’s first major partner, it was a turning point in the planning. From then on, Anna and Karen realised that they had to pull out all stops to make the expedition happen - whether or not they managed to raise the total amount of capital needed.

The trust - a living tribute

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust is a living tribute to Sir Winston, former British Prime Minister, whose example is the inspiration for the trust's work.

He died in 1965 and many thousands of people, in respect for the man and grateful for his inspired leadership, gave generously to a public subscription to fund Travelling Fellowships.

All British Citizens resident in the UK are eligible for the annual awards.

The Fellowships are to enable men and women from all walks of life to acquire knowledge and experience abroad. In the process, they gain a better understanding of the lives and different cultures of people overseas and, on their return, their effectiveness at work and their contribution to the community is enhanced greatly.

Churchill Fellows can be of any age and in any occupation. Everyone has an equal chance; a lack of qualifications is not a bar to an award as every application is judged on the worth of the individual and the merit of the project.

Applicants should demonstrate that their project is feasible and worthwhile, and of benefit to their community and to the UK on return. Past award winners have included nurses, artists, scientists, engineers, farmers, conservationists, carers, craft workers, artisans, members of the emergency services, sportsmen and women and, of course, disabled people.

The Trust is a Registered Charity (No. 313952).
