Christmas leavers get into enterprising spirit
20 December 2005

A group of eight pupils from schools in Ross and Cromarty have been taking part in a new programme to help them make a smooth transition into life after they leave school.

The group, who can leave their respective schools at Christmas, received their 'Get into Enterprise' certificates to mark their participation on the programme from local MP Charles Kennedy. The ceremony was held at Ross County's football stadium in Dingwall today (Tuesday 20 December).

The programme has been run by Careers Scotland, with support from The Highland Council and Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust, to address the specific needs of the pupils, including encouraging them to develop a more entrepreneurial spirit.

Funding for the programme has come from Careers Scotland and the schools through their 'Determined to Succeed' budget.

The school pupils came from Tain Royal Academy, Alness Academy, Bridgend Education Centre, Invergordon Academy, Fortrose Academy and Dingwall Academy.

The pupils, who have met once a week since September, have developed employability skills as well as increasing their self-esteem, self respect and self awareness through a number of different activities. These skills have been put to good use with over £500 being raised for the pupils' nominated charity - Macmillan cancer relief.

Heather Muir from Careers Scotland is one of the leaders who worked with the group. She said: "These young people are now much better prepared for life after school. They have an improved understanding of themselves and know where to go for help and guidance if that is needed.

"They have come to trust the various agencies that participated in the programme and their creativity and entrepreneurial skills have been developed thanks to the support and mentoring from the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust."
