HIE Network publishes fourteenth annual report

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network (HIE) has published its 14th annual report and accounts, covering the agency’s activities during the period from 1st April 2004 to 31st March 2005.

The documents detail HIE’s performance during an eventful year which saw the Network invest a record £113.7 million in projects across the Highlands and Islands.

Highlights of 2004-05 included:

  • leading the drive to establish a life science research institute, the Centre for Health Science, Inverness;
  • continuing to support UHI Millennium Institute to create a university;
  • accelerating the rollout and extending the reach of broadband telecommunications;
  • moving forward with a second, tidal energy phase of the innovative European Marine Energy Centre, in Orkney;
  • the formal opening of the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort;
  • developing the Argyll Marine Science Initiative to support cutting-edge research and commercial opportunities arising from the Scottish Association for Marine Science, Dunstaffnage, and
  • creating the Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company to enable communities throughout the area to explore and develop opportunities to establish renewable energy projects.
