Need to pick up an email when out on the road? Email system down at a crucial moment? Sick and tired of spam? A new mobile phone email address service may be the answer…

118mail.com say they will give every mobile phone number in the UK its very own email address, making it easier for consumers and businesses to keep in touch. And the UK-based firm are also incorporating into their offering a patent-pending security system to stop spam delivery and prevent spammers from abusing their service.

“We have established a range of unique safeguards in order to protect our users from spam or unwanted emails. The most significant safeguard being our patent-pending verification system, which requires each user to prove they are the owner of the phone number activated,” 118mail.com state.

Users register via the 118mail.com website and are only able to access the email service after verification by texting to a premium rate number. This one-off activation costs £1.50 plus standard network charges. Thereafter, there are further verification checks at quarterly intervals to ensure the number is still active and valid.

The firm explains that the verification checks are necessary to ensure the platform’s integrity and prevent spam abuse. As part of the fight against spam, the 118mail.com service limits email delivery to messages from other verified 118mail.com users, from contacts in the user’s address book or from people they have previously emailed from within the 118mail.com system.

Key features of the 118mail.com service are:

• Simplified email addresses, the username being the mobile phone number
• The ability to create 'name@118mail.com' addresses if you don’t wish to give out your mobile number
• Full POP3 and IMAP functionality
• Email forwarding to another email account

As well as defences against spam both from within and outwith their email system, 118mail.com add that they have also put in place strong external access controls to identify and stop viruses.

If this type of moby email service takes off, we can expect others to get in on the act too. Watch this space…
