Retailers talk shop about strategy

| 26 April 2005 An enthusiastic group of Caithness and Sutherland retailers have benefited from an innovative new training programme aimed at helping them to undertake strategic analysis of their businesses and consider future development plans. The diversity of retail business in the north was clear from those who took part - from grocery to clothing, newsagent to garden centre and visitor attraction gift shop. The pilot 'Strategic Thinking for Retail Businesses' programme was funded by Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE), and was delivered over four two-day sessions by course tutor Iain Fraser. His promise to participants on the programme was straightforward - "Come along, and I'll guarantee to make a difference to you and your business" - this has been fulfilled as evidenced by the enthusiastic endorsement of all the participants. Andrew Fairley of Grounds and Gardens, Helmsdale said: "I went back to my business from the sessions with my head full of ideas!" Iain Fraser found working with the group of retailers a great experience. He said: "This has been very satisfying dealing with business men and women who are so committed to Caithness and Sutherland. Strategic thinking helps to achieve the goal of keeping customer spend in Caithness and Sutherland rather than in other areas." Anne Sutherland, senior development manager at CASE, said: "The six businesses who invested their time and energy in the programme are to be congratulated. I appreciate it is not always easy for businesses to commit the time needed to undertake this type of development but I'm sure those who did will reap the rewards of doing so. "This has been a pilot programme to assess the benefits of running strategic level training aimed at specific business sectors and all reports suggest it has been an outstanding success." Businesses which were not able to take part this time may be interested to know that another programme is planned for later in the year.
