ITsafe launched

ITsafe launched
25 February 2005

A government service has been launched to advise micro-businesses and home users on how to protect themselves from virus, malware and hackers.

ITsafe is a new initiative to provide users with proven, plain English advice to prevent malicious attack of computers, mobile phones and other vulnerable IT devices.

Although not a security solution in its own right, ITsafe consists of straight-forward guidance on counter-measures and a free email or text message alert service for breaking news on the latest security threats.

The site is taking a leaf out of America’s book which has an organisation with largely similar aims, the US National Cyber Security Alliance's StaySafeOnline.

The UK initiative is being driven by the Home Office and draws on data supplied by the National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre (NISCC) - the Government’s centre for electronic defence.

Home Office minister Hazel Blears said: “There is a clear need for easy-to-understand and simple independent advice for non-technically minded people who use computers either at home or at work. The purpose of this new Government service is to ensure computer users are aware of the risks involved and how to deal with them easily and effectively without causing alarm.”
