Second helping for successful cookbook
02 November 2004

A cookbook promoting locally produced vegetables 'from plough to plate' has proved so temping, its Moray authors and publishers have had to order second helpings.

Kinloss-based Jacqui Jones and Joan Wilmot have commissioned another print run of their Boxing Clever cookbook to keep up with demand from across the UK.

Launched two years ago with the assistance of a £2,496 business start-up grant from Moray Badenoch and Strathspey Enterprise (MBSE) to set up their own publishing company, the first print run of 2,000 sold out quickly.

Described as the 'Bible of the Box Schemes' by its readers, the pair's collaboration has also won the approval of The Soil Association, with a foreword written by its director, farmer and food commentator Patrick Holden.

The book, based on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme, was the first of its kind in the UK and has been warmly welcomed by subscribers to the country's hundreds of vegetable box schemes.

CSA schemes are partnerships between farms and local people providing a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Subscribers buy a share of the season's harvest from the farm, either in a lump sum before the seeds are sown in the early spring, or in instalments throughout the growing season. In return for their investment, CSA subscribers receive a box of fresh, locally grown, organic, vegetables and fruit once a week, which they pick up from a local drop-off point.

As well as 360 simple to follow recipes for the produce subscribers receive, the Boxing Clever cookbook, is packed with handy tables of seasonal fruit and vegetables, advice on how to manage weekly produce boxes and monthly farming news. It also contains useful information on CSA and similar vegetable box schemes.

As subscribers to the EarthShare CSA scheme, near Forres, former teacher Jacqui and team development trainer Joan originally decided to write the book for their own needs. They formed J&J Publishing to publish and market the book.

Jacqui said: "Time constraints often led to boxes piling up and vegetables either being wasted or not being used when they were freshly harvested. Through market research, we discovered other people in similar schemes across the UK were also struggling with their boxes and often giving up.

"As users of boxes, we realised that nobody had written a cookbook specifically for box scheme subscribers and enough variety of dedicated recipes were few and far between.

"We are delighted the book has proved so successful, particularly as it reflects the growing interest in CSA and vegetable box schemes."

Since the publication of the book, the authors have been invited to speak at food events both in the UK and Europe.

Douglas Yule, chief executive of MBSE, said: "This is a wonderful example of two people taking something that was a personal interest and using their energy, flair, imagination and determination to turn it into a successful business venture.

"We are pleased to have been able to help with this process and wish Jacqui and Joan continuing success with the cookbook."
