| Maximising the economic potential of renewable energy | |
| 20 September 2004 The potential economic benefits of renewable energy will be the focus of a high level conference in Inverness on 29th September. Economic development professionals and experts on renewable energy will gather at the city's Green House business incubator for the one-day event. An expert panel, which includes representatives from both the public and private sectors, will give presentations and take part in an interactive session to consider the opportunities for Scotland, the potential size and structure of future markets as well as gaps in existing supply chains. Stuart Black, chief executive of Inverness and Nairn Enterprise, who will be chairing the event said: "By renewable energy, we are not just talking about on-shore wind power which seems to get all the headlines, but a whole range of sources, including wave, tide and wood fuel. "The Highlands and Islands has an abundance of these resources and it's important we make good use of the present window of opportunity. "The purpose of the event is to bring together the knowledge and expertise of these professionals to ensure that we maximise this potential. "It is vital that the people of the Highlands and Islands embrace renewable energy, not just because of the need to find alternatives to gas and oil, but because the economic benefits of renewables could be a lifeline for some of our more fragile communities." Elaine Hanton, senior development manager at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, who will be giving an overview of government policy support for the development of renewables, said: "The renewable energy sector offers the Highlands and Islands substantial economic opportunities, in terms of local business development, inward investment possibilities and the positive impact it can have on communities who become actively involved in projects. "This event will give us the chance to share ideas and information in order to secure the widest possible benefits for this area." The event is being organised by the Economic Development Association Scotland (EDAS). Chair of EDAS, Jean Hamilton, added: "Sustainable development and green issues are becoming an increasingly important aspect in economic development. The renewables sector, as a growth sector, has the potential to bring Scotland immense economic benefits. All practitioners in Scotland can learn from the early work of the Highlands and Islands to promote renewable energy. "EDAS, as the premier association for those with an interest in economic development, is pleased to bring this topical seminar to the fore to help raise awareness of this important area as well as stimulate action within Scotland to support this emerging sector. | |
